Palm oil is an ingredient common in nearly everything we consume from pizzas and donuts to shampoo and toothpaste. Not surprisingly, this highly versatile oil is also prevalent in the chocolate we all eat. But, its widespread use is having serious and significant consequences across the world, and here at Langleys we are making a stand against palm oil.

What is Palm Oil?

This oil comes from the fruit of oil palm trees grown in over 42 countries, most notably Indonesia and Malaysia which account for almost 85% of its production. It’s an edible and versatile vegetable oil that has many different properties and functions which makes it so useful and so widely used including:

  • odourless and colourless, which is ideal for food production
  • resistant to oxidisation which can establish longer shelf life for products
  • and remains semi-solid at room temperature which is ideal for keeping products stable for longer like spreadable butter.

Why is IT a problematic ingredient?

With such huge demand for palm oil, the environmental consequences are alarming. It has become a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino. As these forests are cleared greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere from the peat soils contributing to the escalation in climate change. Reducing our demand on an ingredient which has been and continues to a serious threat to our futures, needs to be addressed.

Palm oil free chocolate from Langleys

Making an adjustment to our ingredients where the outcome reduces the impact on the environment without compromising great flavour was our goal last year. From the beginning of 2020, our chocolate production changed and we are delighted to announce that all our chocolates are now completely free of palm oil. As a small independent Cornish chocolatier we are proud of our achievements as early adopters of new production methods, and hope other producers will follow suit.

You still get to enjoy the great flavour combinations across our range of products, but now when you purchase from Langleys you’re also helping to reduce the carbon footprint and reducing the demand on an unwelcome ingredient.
